Actis
Furioso sees Italian reeds player/composer Carlo Actis Dato expand his celebrated
quartet into a nonet, giving his trademark wittily exuberant, wide-ranging,
joyous yet fundamentally serious music extra texture and solidity, not to
mention a range of new soloists.
The album’s seven pieces, all written by Dato, but four of them arranged by soprano/alto player Massimo Rossi, range from rowdy ensemble romps interspersed with vocal interjections (‘Here We Are’), through plangent chorale-like plaints (‘Morto che parla’), irresistibly breezy knees-ups (‘Bella Ciao!’) and swirling, multi-textured, eclectic compositions drawing inspiration from what often seems like the whole of world music sieved through Dato’s utterly individual sensibility.
Best experienced live (where the band’s costumes and personalities become part of a superb spectacle), but wholly enjoyable on record, Actis Furioso, instantly identifiable, idiosyncratically virtuosic yet immediately accessible, are simply one of the most original and vibrant bands on the contemporary European jazz scene.
