COMING UP AT THE VORTEX!

FRIDAY 21 APRIL – THURSDAY 27 APRIL

To enjoy jazz in general, and at the Vortex in particular, is an adventure. The musicians are like mountain guides. They’re leading us up what would be impossible journeys to undertake on our own – in new directions and giving us new experiences. And always safely and memorably! The coming week is exactly like that in so many ways…

For example, we have the chance to discover old friends in new collaborations, such as Martin Speake with Alcyona Mick on Monday 24th. They are developing on a friendship that started at the London Jazz Orchestra’s monthly gigs at the club.

There are also several opportunities to hear interpreters of the new generation just arriving on the scene. Some are already here and have been heard at the club before, such as guitarist Karim Saber, who gives us a sneak preview from music of his forthcoming album on Wednesday 26th.
Tonight’s double bill (Friday 21st) will be a thrilling adventure. A set from a new generation of younger guys (Edlund/Stylianides/Chalk)is married with Swiss energetic trio UASSYN – the same kick of an espresso martini without the hangover.
BOOK YOUR TICKETS FOR TONIGHT!
Further youth on Tuesday 25th with the Guildhall Jazz Singers, directed by our old friend Scott Stroman. The quality of these student musicians is breathtaking. That’s why they are no makeweight to the club’s programme. Tickets available HERE.
It is particularly exciting that we have several musicians who are making a great effort to be here from overseas or travelling far in the UK. French vibraphonist Simon Moullier who visits from New York tomorrow (Saturday 22nd) has received plaudits from Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones, who describes him as Best vibes player I’ve heard…”
Simon Moullier Quartet – Live at the Jazz Gallery

Matt Carmichael is coming down from Scotland on Thursday 27thand, like many of his compatriots including most recently Fergus McCreadie, has found a way to make us reassess Scottish folk through a jazz lens. He will have a London band to die for, including BBC New Generation Artist Rob Luft.
The Far Away Ones – Live at The Yard, Manchester, NQ Jazz
MATT CARMICHAEL W/ ROB LUFT, NOAH STONEMAN, CORRIE DICK & STEVE WATTS
More free improv from Mopomoso for its monthly show on Sunday 23rd which as ever gives us the chance to experience free improvisation across the generations with 8 musicians in 4 contrasting sets. From the solo vocal dexterity of Viv Corringham to a trio of trumpet (Daniel Cano), bass (Andrea di Biase), drums(Dave Storey).
JOIN THE MOPOMOSO CREW ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON!
Also on Sunday, our weekly jam led by saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan with his house band featuring: Tom Ollendorff (guitar), Conor Murray (bass) & Dave Storey (drums). £5 entry and free for Vortex members & participating musicians!
Meanwhile John Etheridge on Monday 24th inaugurates a new informal series of interview/gigs where some of our valued musical friends will be letting us into the secrets of their lifetime musical journeys and influences with words and music.  John’s stories are always riveting  – from Soft Machine via Stephane Grapelli and Nigel Kennedy and then back to Soft Machine.
JOHN ETHERIDGE – CHATTING ABOUT (AND WITH) THE MUSIC
