“The band admirably reflects the independent creativity of the new Manchester scene.” – John Fordham on Johnny Hunter Quartet, The Guardian
Johnny Hunter is a drummer and band-leader at the heart of the thriving Manchester scene. Earlier this year he released his debut album ‘While We Still Can’ on the EFPI label, which also houses all-conquering big band Beats & Pieces.
He is joined by some of the top players from a Manchester scene that is fast becoming UK Jazz’s new centre of gravity. Mark Hanslip (Outhouse, Loop Collective) on Sax, Graham South (Beats & Pieces Big Band) on Trumpet, and Seth Bennett (IDST) on Bass.
Hunter’s music explores the possibilities and challenges afforded by the absence of a harmony instrument, and can be compared to artists like Joe Harriot, Ornette Coleman, and Henry Threadgil.
