Tony Malaby – saxes
Richard Bonnet – guitar
Sylvain Darrifourcq – drums
French-American trio composed of New York tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby, and two exciting personalities from the french new improv scene – guitarist Richard Bonnet and drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq. As a trio of improvisors they present a music form unpinned by spontaneous creativity. The effect is spontaneous music with a special raw energy: permanently boiling and uncompromising as codes and conventions give way to a dialogic freedom.
Tony Malaby has been a member of many notable jazz groups including Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra, Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band, Mark Helias’ Open Loose, Fred Hersch’s quintet and Walt Whitman project, Michell Portal’s Birdwatcher, various projects with Daniel Humair and bands led by Mario Pavone, Tim Berne, Chris Lightcap, Kris Davis, Angelica Sanchez, Michael Attias and Marty Ehrlich.
Richard Bonnet is a French avant-garde guitarist from Paris. He has performed with many artists, including Tony Malaby, Tom Rainey, Gerald Cleaver, Hasse Poulsen… On his CD “Morning Bear, ” he composes for solo guitar, infusing 20th century European classical language with the freedom of the blues.
John Fordham of the Guardian said of French drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq [he is] a prodigious original whose repertoire has all the spiky, crackling energy of improv, but which balances spontaneity with very tight organisation.
