Don Weller was one of a cohort of British saxophonists who were mainstays of the Vortex in its early days in the 1990s. Don, Alan Skidmore, Bobby Wellins as well as Stan Tracey. It was a great good fortune for David Mossman that he could call on this group of musicians to give the foundation for the club. Reliable in terms of constant flowing imagination and also in being able to bring in an audience – essential for a club that needed to constantly cover its costs.
