The word ‘free’ in jazz comes up in so many contexts. Freedom for the performer, freeness in terms of ‘point of sale’, free jazz in terms of lack of constraint.
The word ‘free’ became a style (or attitude) after it was used by Ornette Coleman for his 1961 album. And then became almost more codified.
What freedom did it give the artist? A chance to move forward, or an opening of the mind. So did this attitude even help in giving a strength in more authoritarian regimes such as Eastern Europe. To what extent is improvisation a crucial element?
