The Vortex Jazz Festival is part of  Hackney Council’s “Hello Again Hackney” programme

 

Welcome to the feed the Soul Vortex Jazz Club Festival 2022 page!

 

It’s been a while since our last festival which makes it all the more exciting that we are able to pull this one off.  It will be a day of celebration with free live music in Gillett Square and an exhibition; indoor live performances and live art.

Line-ups include David Ijaduola’s Lucumi Suite performed by members of Ebony Steel Band (winner Of Panorama UK 2022), Hackney talent RarelyAlways (Ricco Komolafe), and Hans Koller’s Big Band (indoors and ticketed).

On Sunday events are ticketed. Moposomo Live will perform music made in the moment, and hold a screening of Ebba Jahn’s Miniatures by Improvisers. In the evening Calum Gourlay’s Big Band will perform Duke Ellington’s Queen’s Suite. The members of this band are some of the UK’s most innovative musicians.

There will be plenty of good vibes and entertainment to feed the soul! Our refreshment bars will include besides the usual, cocktails and ELB East End Lager and Pale Ale on tap.  Checkout Kaffa Coffee for vegan / vegetarian Ethiopian food, Ewart’s Jerk for Caribbean food or AsoRock for a traditional Nigerian meal.

Kicking off the festival ….

JULIAN JOSEPH ACADEMY – GILLETT SQUARE  (14:15-15:00)

The Julian Joseph Jazz Academy (JJJA) Band are young musicians serious about playing and learning jazz. many of them are making positive strides as they enter the professional jazz scene with others making a big impression attending music programs across the capital. They all perform and learn regularly however at the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy where they congregate weekly.
Ava Joseph is a vocalist of remarkable maturity and insight able to get to the emotion and drama of a song. Pianists Oliver Cunningham, Sam Sessay and Danny Piers all draw from a wide range of influences and abound with a solid melodic foundation, impactful rhythm and an intelligent harmonic sensibility. Simon Lamb is a direct and focussed drummer with Menelik Claffey and Tom Sheen building strong anchors through their approach to sound to create intensity and swing.
The melodic horns of Mejedi Owusu, Sonny Caplan-Higgs and Ruben Ross round off a wonderful group of young players ready to start taking their place on the bigger stages amongst their heroes and heroines.

AKOLA TAMBO – GILLETT SQUARE (15:30-16:15)

The first bullerengue group in the UK, was born in London in 2020 under the leadership of Esteban Cardona (Esteban Card). Its mission to continue the tradition of bullerengue – a music genre and dance style from the Colombian Caribbean coast, rooted in African musical forms brought by African slaves. Akolá Tambó has fast become an artistic reference point for the tradition of bullerengue and is frequently invited to perform on some of the Latin American community’s most important stages. Akolá Tambó’s performances evoke the primal energy often associated with African percussion and the visceral power of the singing voice. The symbolic elements of its dance moves, often represent women’s role in the community. It is said that bullerengue is a powerful tool to connect to the world and transcend the hardships of daily life.

AURIS DELAN & BAND – GILLETT SQUARE (16:45-17:30)

Multi-instrumentalist Auris Delan brings his mixed heritage and life-experiences to his musical performances. Born in Manchester he moved to London to train as a dancer before taking up music that came to provide a creative outlet for him to express himself. Auris’s musical style is a blend of African, Latin, Native American and Caribbean rhythms stitched together in a UK home-brew style.

DAVID IJADUOLA’S LUCUMI SUITE fT. EBONY STEEL BAND PLUS GUESTS – GILLETT SQUARE (18:00-19:00)

Supported by the PRS Foundation for Music

Out of ordinary improvised metal objects such as biscuit and pitch oil tins, dustbins and their lids, and later on oil drums – the preferred object because they could be tuned through series of dents, where each one made a different note according to its position and size – the steelband was born in Trinidad. Steelbands captured the imagination of young impoverished working-class males, often with little formal education or musical training. Their bands were built on the strong community bonds in their neighbourhoods and this hasn’t changed much today with the exception that more women now play. Multi-instrumentalist David Ijaduola (Juno Jaxxon) has been arranging and composing for steelband since he was fifteen. Under his leadership London’s Ebony Steelband took second place in the UK Panorama Finals 2021   and first place in the 2022 Finals. This suite of music will performed by a steelband of ten players with the addition of other supporting brass instruments. Be prepared to be blown away by Jaxxon’s remarkable remarkable skills as composer, arranger and educator.

RARELYALWAYS (RICCO KOMOLAFE) – GILLETT SQUARE (19:30-20:30)

Jazz / grime artist / other RarelyAlways is a man who stands alone and can only be assessed on his own terms. You might hear hints of great British one-offs like Tricky, Roots Manuva, even a more laid-back Dizzee Rascal. You might hear trip hop, jazz, those undercurrents of rock, J Dilla style beat science, and more – you’re free to apply whatever terminology you like: as RarelyAlways says, “I don’t complain about pigeonholes, I don’t mind how you talk about my music as long as you’re talking about it.” But above all else, what you’re hearing is Rarelyalways bassists, producer, composer and music director known to slay any audience with his infamous 5-piece band consisting of (Flugal horn, organ, guitar, synth bass, drums and vocals). Rarelyalways’ genre-crossing and experimentation has seen him embark on a meteoric rise from the streets of Hackney to collaborating with renowned fusion musician Hanni El-Khatib.

HANS KOLLER BIG BAND – VORTEX JAZZ CLUB  (21:00-23:30)

This new big band project is a natural development of Koller’s critically acclaimed 2016 JazzLines commission Twelve Re-inventions for George Russell which was premiered at the CBSO centre in Birmingham and recorded for BBC Radio 3, and of Koller’s recent large ensemble work with Bird Migration. For this special night of two houses at the Vortex, the thirteen piece ensemble will play brand new large scale music inspired by Charlie Parker and George Russell.

TIM SANDERS (artist/illustrator) EXHIBITION: BLUE NOTES & RED HOT SCRIBBLE – DOWNSTAIRS (13:00 – 20:00)

Tim Sanders is a veteran artist and cartoonist who has spent many years documenting London, people, musicians and other animals. He has produced illustrations and cartoons for many leading publications including The Guardian, Observer, Telegraph, You magazine, Private Eye, Broadcast and lots more. Fifteen years at the Independent newspaper producing pocket cartoons and illustrations gave Sanders a body of work that formed the basis of a book An Independent Line. Other books include The Heat of the Scribble with Paul Foot and Wild About London with poems by William Hatchett about the wonders of nature in our capital city, as well as the graphic novel 1917  written by John Newsinger. More recently, he has illustrated a series of children’s books for the Spanish market, titled Las Maravillosas Aventuras del Señor Soul (Jazz, Blues and Pop) with Andreu Cunill, from which many of these images are taken. What else is there to say except he makes repeated attempts to play the soprano sax!

Mopomoso is the UK’s longest running concert series dedicated to freely improvised music! Come & join us on Sunday 25th September as part of The Vortex’s Jazz Festival!

Get ready for a super special screening of wonderful Ebba Jahn’s Miniatures by Improvisers, plus the Mopomoso Orchestra will perform featuring; Sylvia Hallett, Viv Corringham, mcddavid, Paul Jolly, Charlotte Keeffe, Pascal Marzan, Bruno Guastalla, Kostas Chondros & more, they will blow the roof off with exquisite music made in the moment! RESONANCES – VORTEX DOWNSTAIRS

Résonances is an experimental event merging live visual art, dance, musical performance and poetry. Led by artist Aurelie Freoua and co-produced by Ley Loosh, the performances take you on a journey of creation, improvisation and interactions between all these art forms. This audio-visual experience aims to create dynamic and harmonious dialogues between different disciplines resonating, echoing and inspiring one another. Résonances is also an immersive experience where a thematic is explored, such as metamorphosis, dreams and memories for the previous events. This multidisciplinary live performance aims at challenging the perceptions of the viewer, stimulating their senses and emotions.

CALUM GOURLAY BIG BAND PLAYS “THE QUEEN SUITE” – VORTEX JAZZ CLUB

Bandleader, bassist and Ivors-nominated composer Calum Gourlay brings new music to each show, which is played on the spot by some of the city’s most innovative musicians. An evening (or afternoon) with the Big Band is a night of daring improvisation and a celebration of community: it’s what makes live music irreplaceable.First half of this show will feature some new compositions and some old music from the residency at the Vortex.

Second half will be “The Queens Suite” including “The Single Petal of a Rose”and some other specially selected Ellington numbers.
