What is ‘new’ in jazz and what is part of the ‘tradition’? Is the latter word an insult and to be ignored? And yet, much of the new jazz nowadays takes a very huge influence of the so-called tradition. Such as the influences of Blue Note in the 1960s, or Afrobeat in the 1980s.
How should we therefore judge the jazz avant-garde, such as free improv, or more radical attempts where jazz meets art?
With the Arts Council England having decided recently on changing the geographic and confirming particular stylistic directions, this becomes quite an important topic.
