About
The Leicestershire-raised, Welsh-rooted saxophonist Nye Banfield presents his debut record ‘Trails and Traces’ live at the Vortex. The show will feature Nye’s sextet, performing his original music, plus an opening set from captivating duo BIGHEADMODE.
A graduate of Trinity Laban, Nye is a profoundly creative musician who paints visceral scenes from his life through composition and improvisation. Headfirst Bristol describes him as ‘an original composer who knows both the roots of modern jazz and where he intends to take his own music’.
‘Trails and Traces’, releasing on vinyl in January 2024, features classy ‘Banger Factory’ leader Mark Kavuma on trumpet. The music bursts with an infusion of influences, from avant-garde 60s Blue Note records, modern Jazz icon Ambrose Akinmusire, college mentor Mark Lockheart, as well as British composer Vaughan Williams, Radiohead and the song writing of Damon Albarn.
The sextet breathe life into every corner of Nye’s compositions, creating an engaging and thrilling sound, leading the listener on a vivid journey. Expect energy, improvisation and risk-taking.
BIGHEADMODE
BIGHEADMODE is a sonic landscape built upon an unwavering fraternal groove of brothers Robbie and Ewan Moore. Their sound has an unapologetic eclecticism that swings wildly from intimate broken beat lo-fi to break-neck 70s fusion bravado, punctuated throughout by a cast of rising stars within the new generation of UK Jazz.
Cosmic sci-fi-esque analogue synths wrestle with raw visceral drums amongst a barrage of chopped and screwed samples; creating a ‘new age’ sound that somehow feels deeply human and familiar.
