About
“Sharp musicians are encouraged to converse in attractive settings drawn from African townships jive, funk, blues and straight-ahead jazz with a kink in it.” John Fordham THE GUARDIAN
An important figure on the UK and International jazz scenes, Annie has brought her distinctive sound to a wide range of recordings and projects, exploring many different musical styles. These include, amongst many others: the Brotherhood of Breath, John Stevens’ groups, Elton Dean’s Newsense, the Penguin Café Orchestra, McCoy Tyner, Carla Bley, Maxi Priest, Abdullah Ibrahim, Jasper van t’ Hof, Louis Moholo, and Robert Wyatt.
Her various bands have appeared at most major international jazz festivals, and have played throughout the UK in jazz festivals and clubs, and have featured many times on BBC Radio 3, broadcasting from the Blackheath Concert Halls and London Jazz Festival.
Made up of long term collaborators and dear friends, all of who are writers and composers in their own right, the 4tet delivers a powerful and joyous mix of African grooves, blustery free jazz, Ellingtonian expressionism, reggae stylings and bursts of driving blues.
