About

GARETH LOCKRANE

Gareth Lockrane is a flautist, pianist, composer/arranger and educator and has had a richly diverse life as musician since studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1990s (and also a masters in film scoring at the National Film & Television School), working in many different collaborations and projects.

His own projects have included his big band, his band “Grooveyard” with saxophonist Alex Garnett and his septet, all of which have produced acclaimed albums of his compositions.

As a player, he has recorded with and appeared alongside a rich array of artists such as Bheki Mseleku, Dick Oatts, Quincy Jones, RAYE, Lianne La Havas, Phil Robson, James Taylor Quartet, Nikki Iles, Tom Cawley, Christine Tobin, Gwilym Simcock, Louis Cole, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Jim Mullen, Incognito, Anita Wardell, Georgia Mancio and many others. He recently featured as a soloist on the soundtracks for the Michael Caine heist thriller “King Of Thieves”, the Steven Soderbergh political satire “The Laundromat” and the widely acclaimed all-star film “Don’t Look Up”. As an educator, Gareth has run the junior jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music since 2011 (seeing many astonishing talents pass through that course), as well as teaching regularly at degree level at the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity Laban Conservatoire.

Tonight’s gig will be the first for this very special combination of musicians; joining Gareth on all the flutes will be the world class Ivo Neame (piano), Nick Costley-White (guitar), Oli Hayhurst (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums), all of whom are long-time collaborators of Gareth’s and will feature his compositions; some brand new pieces and also some older tunes of his, given a new lease of life from this fantastic group.

“…Lockrane’s flute work is exceptional, combining a relaxed fluidity on the one hand with an acute adventurousness on the other…”
 Peter Quinn,
Jazzwise

“the formidable Lockrane…a stunning display of sharp-accented runs, earthy whoops and constantly refreshed melodic ideas.” John Fordham, The Guardian

“…Lockrane is an exceptional soloist with an improvisatory confidence that’s quite startling…” Peter Vacher, Jazzwise

“…the main feature of this cd is that it strongly features the flute, an instrument which has still not achieved a firm foothold in jazz. If the brilliant playing of Gareth Lockrane is anything to go by, that state of affairs may change…”
Dave Gelly, The Observer
