Line-up:
Alexander Hawkins – Piano
Marco Colonna – Bass Clarinet
About
Composer and improviser Marco Colonna is widely regarded as one of the most unique Italian musicians of his generation. Initially renowned as a multi-instrumentalist, over the past years he has dedicated himself exclusively to the bass clarinet. Alongside his extensive discography as a bandleader are collaborations with the likes of Evan Parker and Matt Maneri, as well as with Roberto Ottaviano in his ‘Eternal Love’ quintet, the ensemble in which he first encountered Alexander Hawkins.
In parallel to his work as a bandleader and soloist, Alexander Hawkins has long been recognised as a specialist and an innovator in the duo idiom, from his first recorded appearance in the format with long-time collaborator Louis Moholo-Moholo, via work with the likes of Tomeka Reid, Nicole Mitchell, Angelika Niescier, and Evan Parker, through to his most recent release, the ‘profound, almost searing, spirituality’ of Musho, his duo with Sofia Jernberg.
Colonna and Hawkins’ first album, Dolphy Underlined, focussed on radical reworkings of music by that composer, can be heard on the Fundacja Słuchaj label.
