Steven Nichols is a London-based trumpeter and composer/arranger. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2024, he signed with Ubuntu Music to release his debut album ’From Dust’.
‘From Dust’ features a quintet of friends who met as students at RAM. They play 7 original compositions steeped in the sounds of folk, straight-ahead, free and contemporary British jazz, charting Steven’s growth as an artist during the latter years he spent as a student and reflecting his personal journey to faith.
His described his goal as wanting to achieve “a blend of tradition and innovation”, which a recent JazzFuel review picked up on: “Rich modern harmony, well-considered arrangements and expressive improvisations from each member of the ensemble are stitched together with a strong foothold in tradition, and a vivacious forward-thinking spirit.” Other critical praise for ‘From Dust’ includes 4-star reviews from Jazzwise and TheJazzMann, the latter exclaiming: “the triumph is Nichols’ with this assured and intelligent debut.”
Steven looks forward to performing his ‘From Dust’ project live for the first time since 2022, joined by the same quintet as is featured on the album.
