Abraham Mennen is a South African multi-award winning saxophonist, improvisor, composer and multi-discipline artist. Abraham has worked with Louis Moholo, William Parker, Oliver Lake, Kidd Jordan, Joe Morris, John Lockwood, Herbie Tsoaeli, Hilton Schilder, Kyle Shepherd, Kesivan Naidoo, Hamid Drake, Cooper-Moore, Shabaka Hutchins, Reza Khota, Mandla Mlangeni and many others. He has recorded with William Parker and is a member of several of his ensembles. He is also a member of the Hilton Schilder Quartet and various of Louis Moholo’s ensembles.
Abraham performs regularly in New York and throughout South Africa. He has recorded three albums under his own name with the latest two albums due for release December 2018, namely “The Really Revered Whole Story” and “Three Improvisations”.
Abraham has recently recorded two new studio albums on the label Faure Music. The Really Revered Whole Story is a quartet studio album of original music composed by Abraham Mennen featuring Abraham Mennen on saxophones, Reza Khota on Guitar, Ariel Zamonsky on double bass, Clement Benny on drums. Three Improvisations is a duo studio album comprising three improvisations; two completely free form and one based off an original by Ariel Zamonsky (from Shabaka and The Ancestors). The album features Abraham on saxophone and percussion, and Ariel Zamonsky on on the double bass.
Raph is known for his work with World Service Project but now, even more, for his innovative groups Dissolute Society and Resolute. Collaborations are in his DNA – with poets, artists and musicians from all around the globe.
