About
For this gig the Billy Marrows Band will be expanded to a sextet featuring three special-guest horn players. They will be playing a selection of Billy’s compositions and favourite tunes arranged specially for this line-up, including music from Billy’s upcoming debut release and some new music.
The Billy Marrows Band has been playing together since early 2019 and is normally a quartet featuring Billy Marrows (guitar), Chris Williams (alto), Huw V Williams (bass) and Jay Davis (drums). These unique and highly creative musicians bring a thrilling spontaneity to Billy’s vibrant compositions and their style of contemporary jazz is inspired by an eclectic mix of influences, including Weather Report, Loose Tubes and Bill Frisell. The music is inventive and intriguing whilst remaining infectiously melodic and has been described as ‘fearsome modern jazz, but with actual tunes; a winning combination’. Their debut release Dancing on Bentwood Chairs is due to be out later this year.
Billy is an award-winning guitarist and composer/arranger based in London. He has received commissions from Lancaster Jazz Festival, National Youth Jazz Collective and Berlin based Fabia Mantwill Orchestra and studied with Vince Mendoza on the 2018 Metropole Orkest Arrangers Workshop. He has won both the large and small ensemble Dankworth Prize For Jazz Composition. Billy has toured and recorded with bands including Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, Tom Ridout Quintet and the Tom Barford Group.
