SYNOPSIS
IN ASSOCIATION WITH OFFBEAT. Ethan Hawke gives a truly riveting performance as Chet Baker, the legendary trumpeter and singer who, after becoming a jazz icon in the 1950s, became equally famous for his drug addiction. BORN TO BE BLUE re-imagines Baker’s life as a mixture of fact and fiction, picking up his story late in his career when, after years of heroin abuse, financial loss, and public disgrace, he attempts to stage a comeback by starring in a film about his own infamous life. It’s a remarkable visual and aural journey superbly anchored by Ethan Hawke as the troubled but charming genius – ‘the James Dean of jazz’ – whose contribution to music was as great as his addictions were tragic.
+ live jazz performance and Q&A with BORN TO BE BLUE director Robert Budreau and special guests.
