About

The Vortex Jazz Club presents a special double bill featuring the Brussels-based bassist Farida Amadou and Caius Williams.

Farida Amadou is a self taught bass player based in Brussels, Belgium. The electric bass is her main instrument since 2011. In 2013, she has started to play a lot of different musical genres, including blues, jazz and hip-hop. Soon Farida started to dive into improvisation music, and got rapidly identified by local collectif and musicians. After a year (2017) as bass player in belgian punk band Cocaine Piss, Farida decided to focus on her solo improvisation practice and collaborations with musicians like Steve Noble, Thurston Moore, Peter Brötzmann, Terrie Ex, Lukas Koening, Pat Thomas, Julien Desprez among other occasional featuring such as Jerusalem in My Heart and Moor Mother.

Working frequently as both a collaborator and a solo artist, Caius has a duo project ‘Crosspiece’ with Theodora Laird (alongside playing guitars for Theodora’s project ‘feeo’), a longstanding duo project with Tara Cunningham, and was recently involved in the live performances of ‘Lifetones’: a project led by Charles Bullen of ‘This Heat’, and he regularly works with many of London’s notable improvisers. Recent releases include solo double bass record ‘Gwannach’ (OTOROKU), ‘Crosspiece’ with Theodora Laird (Cherche Encore), ‘Stiga’ with Tom Challenger and Benedict Taylor (GRAIN), and ‘Worn’, in trio with Will Glaser and Tara Cunningham (self-release).

Caius has been running and curating the ‘GRAIN’ residency for improvised and experimental music at Avalon Cafe in Bermondsey, and is in collaboration with saxophonist Tom Challenger on releasing a series of recordings of improvisations and new works, recorded as part of the residency. For this performance, he will be joined in duo by the world renowned drummer and improviser Mark Sanders.
