About
Campus celebrates twenty years of eclectic artistic career since she left Sardinia to move to London. This project presents new compositions written with pianist Steve Lodder and arrangements of tunes that have been part of her repertoire and international collaborations. Campus explores the female side of jazz with songs about female artists who have inspired her work, such as theatre practitioner Franca Rame, or legendary figures like Queen Mab, a fairy referred to in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, where “she is the fairies’ midwife, who helps artists give birth to their dreams. The trio presents an engaging, passionate journey where music and improvisation intertwine with spoken word, poetry, and comic sketches, where Mab is compared to Sardinian myths of the Janas (legendary fairies) linking her Mediterranean roots to contemporary jazz with an electronic twist.
“Campus’ love of London and Sardinia, jazz and the theatre, were combined in an evening of great musical skill and impassioned improvisation” Alison Bentley, LondonJazz
“Her scatting is literally something else, a modernist in her approach” Erminia Yardley, Jazz in Europe
Internationally renowned jazz vocalist/lyricist/theatre practitioner/academic, whose diverse influences range from modern literature, theatre and art to the culture of her native Sardinia. Filomena has toured or collaborated with Orphy Robinson, Rowland Sutherland, Cleveland Watkiss, Huw Warren, Laura Cole, Byron Wallen, Jean Toussaint, Tori Handsley, Ruth Goller, Kenny Wheeler, Evan Parker, Nana Simopoulos, and the London Improvisers Orchestra, as well as with fellow Sardinian musicians Paolo Fresu, Gavino Murgia and Antonello Salis.
