Singer, songwriter and song-collector, Kalia, showcases her latest project with contemporary music of Crete. Her quartet comprises of Vasilis Chatzimakris on Cretan lyra and mandolin, Nikos Ziarkas on Cretan laouto and electric guitar, and Theodoris Ziarkas ondouble bass. Kalia joins them singing and playing nay, thiaboli, mandoura pipes and daoulaki.
After travelling and studying with master musicians (Ross Daly, Márta Sebestyén, Hussein Arman), collaborating with a number of artists (Xaos, Syriana, Natacha Atlas, Zohar Fresco, Vasilis Sarikis, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Kit Downes, Paprika) and performing on various films (Ben Hur – ABC, Never Let Go – Latitude, Sappho – BBC), Kalia decided to re-visit her roots, with her own project inspired by music from her homeland. This performance is part of a series of showcase concerts presenting the work-in-progress of this new and exciting project. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear original compositions played for the first time and to experience this lesser-known music of Greece.
