About
A London-based guitarist Jakub Klimiuk celebrates the release of his quintet’s latest album ’(un)balanced’. The band, joined by the outstanding saxophonist Mark Lockheart as a special guest, will perform Jakub’s original compositions that blend melodic themes with experimental sonic escapades, merging scripted forms and improvised sections.
Since releasing their debut EP ‘Reluctance’ in 2022, the quintet has regularly toured the UK, performing at the EFG London Jazz Festival and major jazz venues, including PizzaExpress Live and Verdict Jazz Club. The distinctive sound of the band is shaped by the unique creative voices of five highly in-demand young musicians, who have individually worked with Martin Speake, Tom Challenger, NYJO, Hans Koller, among others.
The band’s new album tells the story of seeking balance in today’s reality, manoeuvring through the overwhelming deluge of information and striving to discover inspiration in everyday routine. Jakub’s writing reflects the titular state between order and chaos. The pieces blend harmony with disorder, dissonance with consonance, free improvisation with structured forms. Drawing inspiration from contrasting influences ranging from traditional jazz to the Scandinavian improvised scene and contemporary New York jazz, the quintet creates a sound full of exciting tension.
„(…) Klimiuk has an ability to create a warm harmonic ambiance around the sound of the others, it is only a matter of time before someone mistakes his sound and his generous spirit for those of the great Bill Frisell.” Sebastian Scotney (London Jazz News)
“Thrilling … Startlingly accomplished“ – Stephen Graham from Marlbank, 4/5 stars pre-release review
“Jakub is a promising guitarist/composer with a creative, open-minded approach to music and a strong work ethic. His new quintet album with Mark Lockheart is really impressive.” – Ivo Neame
