A genre-hopping composer, arranger and jazz trumpeter, equally at home creating scores for big bands and symphony orchestras, James’s varied career has so far included collaborations with artists such as Laura Mvula, Yazz Ahmed and Liane Carroll and organisations including the Royal Opera House, PRS Foundation and Gabrieli Consort, and has taken him across the UK, Europe and China. James’ unique musical voice features detailed counterpoint, epic melodies, rhythmic grooves from the African diaspora and adventurous improvisation, and has been recognised with the 2018 Eddie Harvey Award for Jazz Arranging, as well as a PRS Foundation-sponsored composer-in-residence collaboration with the Sage Gateshead’s Jambone ensemble. Featuring a band consisting of many of London and the UK’s leading young players and improvisers, this performance is a rare opportunity to hear a full set of James’ original music, encompassing influences from Bach to Strayhorn to Hermeto Pascoal and including a London premiere of his PRS Foundation-commissioned Jambone Set, a suite on Northumbrian folk tunes, for which the band will be joined by classical mezzo-soprano Cathy Phillips Brady.
