Elaha Soroor is a London based singer / songwriter from Afghanistan. Her music, deeply rooted in the Afghan folk tradition, is a beautiful combination of traditional and modern sounds. For her forthcoming new album ‘Songs Of Our Mothers’, Elaha is collaborating with London-based musicians, producers and founders of Kefaya, Giuliano Modarelli and Al MacSween. Drawing on Elaha’s personal experience of fleeing Afghanistan as a refugee, the album is a deep reflection on the experience of women and female musicians in modern Afghanistan, a scathing attack on patriarchal values and a joyous statement of liberation and resilience. All the songs of the album are based around Afghan folk songs originally composed and performed by female artists with influences spanning from jazz to dub and electronica.
