Pianist Melford can be rhythmic, romantic, stoic, wry, and lusty but most of all daring — all in one tune. The quintet tonight will include Ben Goldberg, Chris Batchelor, Steve Watts and Tim Giles. There will be music by Myra, Ben and Chris. (It will also be recorded by BBC Radio 3.)

Clarinetist Ben Goldberg has been a staple of San Francisco’s improvisational-music scene
ever since he helped put together the well-received New Klezmer Trio two decades ago. Chris Batchelor is known for too much good work, from Loose Tubes through his work with Steve Buckley to his amazing mentoring skills as a teacher. He originally hooked up with Myra for the exciting Big Air project. Steve Watts – our bass scene is only where it is today thanks to Steve. Tim Giles has been a professional drummer since his father had to chaperone him to play at Ronnie Scott’s/
This concert will be recorded for future broadcast by BBC Jazz on 3.
