Kenny Wheeler, a founder member of the London Jazz Orchestra, would have been 90 years old on January 14. A uniquely gifted soloist, he was one of the greatest composers in jazz, with the Vortex a favourite venue for him to play. Having done a special gig for his 80th birthday, the LJO honours his legacy with a full concert of his music, culminating in his beautiful Sweet Time Suite from Music for Large and Small Ensembles, one of the most influential albums of the last 30 years.
