Many of the jazz standards we know and love are inextricably linked to the popular imagination of their time. Following Vortex Collective’s sell-out debut show in late 2022, this programme presents a new selection of compositions being added to the modern repertoire. They include neo soul vocals, video game and anime themes, and contemporary jazz from composers and arrangers such as Esperanza Spalding, Marquis Hill, Nate Smith, and Patrick Bartley.
With Cheng Xie on piano, Drummond Moir on guitar, Eric Lounsbury on trumpet and flugelhorn, Orestes Chouchoulas on bass, Paulina Szczepaniak on drums, Sabina Spagnoli on vocals, and So Takao on alto saxophone.
