About
“Multi-talented singer/visual artist Paula Rae Gibson’s latest album, “The Roles We Play To Disappear”, is an immersive work that mixes experimental songs, ambient electronica and avant-jazz produced/performed with electronic musician and trumpeter Alex Bonney and award-winning composer Kit Downes.
There are reminders of Portishead, of Annette Peacock in the way that she navigates the shadows and waves of the electronic/instrumental backdrop but also of Blemish era David Sylvian. Elsewhere, Luft’s guitars have the plangent quality of Bill Frisell’s on Paths, Prints, Kit Downes’ cello, emanates from a similar suspension to Arthur Russell’s World Of Echo, and
Alex Bonney’s trumpets resound and chatter with frantic luminosity in the darkness, a la Mongezi Feza or Don Cherry. The insistent electronics and beats, add a sense of emotional urgency amid the stillness, hovering with all the indifference of a cold universe to our individual fates.” Jazzwise
