About
Petra Haller invites you to ORBIT: On the Wings of Freedom, the first of three live recording sessions from her groundbreaking improvisational project, ORBIT. Conceptually inspired by Saturn and its multitude of independent moons, the project positions music as the gravitational force that binds a constellation of diverse artistic voices. For this performance, Haller, recognised for using tap dance as a powerful percussive instrument in jazz, is joined by a remarkable ensemble of collaborators: spoken word artist Jeffrey Durrant, cellist Kate Shortt, drummer Sacha Harlan, and pianist Tom O’Brien.
Each performer brings their unique voice to the performance while orbiting around a shared exploration of rhythm, sound, and improvisation. Just as Saturn’s moons are a diverse collection of celestial bodies, each with its own distinct characteristics, these artists represent different aspects of individuality. Music serves as the central force, with the artists converging to celebrate both unity and independence, much like Saturn’s moons in their varied orbits around the planet.
Petra’s journey as an improviser began with the legendary Freedom of Art improvisation sessions, held at The Vortex every second Monday of the month by Cleveland Watkiss, Orphy Robinson, Tori Handsley and Paul Bradshaw. These sessions were a space for spontaneous creative exploration, and they ignited Haller’s artistic evolution and shaped her career. In dedication to the spirit of Freedom, this special live recorded concert is happening on the second Monday in November.
