A unique quintet that combines emotive melody, lush harmony and virtuosic improvisation. The Sam Newbould Quintet draws together some of the most exciting talents on the European jazz circuit. Originating from the UK, Spain, Israel, Italy, and Germany, the group met at the esteemed Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2017. Since then, their tight performances and exciting improvisations have impressed audiences on internationally renowned stages including the Bimhuis Amsterdam, Amersfoort jazz festival and LantarenVenster Rotterdam.
Thoughtful and imaginative, Sam‘s writing is influenced by the compositional styles of Kenny Wheeler, Django Bates, Darcy James Argue and Wayne Shorter. He also draws influence from a number of genres including jazz, English folk, 20th century classical music, 60s rock/pop and a whole host of other styles that can be heard in the music. Having studied under a new wave of European composer/performers including Ben van Gelder, Joris Roelofs, and Reinier Baas, Sam continues to make his mark as an important new voice in contemporary jazz composition.
The quintet’s appearance at the Vortex features as part of their ‘Blencathra’ album release tour. ‘Blencathra’ comprises a set of original compositions written by Sam as a reflection on his time spent growing up in the North of England. The quintet will also feature special guests Billy Marrows (guitar) and Beth Aggett (vocals) – two familiar names on the London jazz circuit.
