A key musician, whom we are delighted to welcome back for a rare quartet gig, his first for 3 years. He performs with an exceptional line-up: Kit Downes (piano), Ruth Goller (bass), James Maddren (drums).
A key member of the reed section of Loose Tubes and as home on penny whistle as saxophone, his own talents veer as far around as African music (following trips to Ghana) and free improv, working with Steve Noble and Oren Marshall. But perhaps he is best known for his long-standing collaboration with trumpeter Chris Batchelor, which has been catalogued for three notable releases, music for the last of which, ‘Big Air’ (on Babel with Myra Melford, Jim Black and Oren Marshall) won a BBC Jazz Award.
A must for all lovers of the instrument.
Here he appears with some alumni of a newer young generation, including Mercury-nominated pianist Kit Downes.
‘Steve’s playing just blows me away. It always reminds me of African music without being African music.
It’s melodic and soulful but very free too.’ Seb Rochford
