About
The Flame is a fierce improvising trio who return to the Vortex. Featuring Robert Mitchell (Piano/Perc/Poetry), Mark Sanders (Drums) and tonight with Olie Brice (Bass – standing in for Neil Charles) – they bring a hugely accomplished individual and international renown. Their very first gig at Cafe Oto was recorded and subsequently caught the ear of the amazing 577 Records (NYC) – who released the first part as a vinyl album earlier this year to great reviews. The music is free flowing, miniscule, immense, unapologetic, percussive and may include original/improvised poetry/spoken word.
‘Indeed, the moments of tantalising interplay, in which Charles’s brawny arco is caught by the buzz-hiss-crack of Sanders’ cymbal or Mitchell’s sly hammering of strings, have a substantial sensory charge. The same can be said of the full eruptions of energy, as interestingly, Sanders, for all his skill in rubato situations, brings a torrid funk to the performance at times, making him an unheralded groovemeister in disguise.’ Kevin Le Gendre **** Jazzwise
