The creative relationship between Orphy and Mark goes back to their time together in the seminal big band Jazz Warriors. Since then they have both gone on to broad and varied careers in this scene. But their connection is so close – way beyond just the creative – that it is a privilege to have them play together.
Mark Mondesir
Mondesir is a drummer that kick-started his pro-career in the mid-1980s when he turned twenty and began working with saxophonist Courtney Pine before going on to play with other notable jazzers such as Julian Joseph, Jean Toussaint, Kevin Eubanks, Joe Zawinul, John Scofield, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner, Jeff Beck and Barbara Dennerlein and many others. Without doubt he is one of the UK‘s most extraordinary drumming talents. Born in East London, Mondesir is largely self-taught, a surprising fact to those who witness his incredible drum independence in action. Possessing a unique talent, he combines technical velocity, complexity and dexterity with an awesome inventiveness and imaginative dynamism, all grounded in an instinctive feel for groove.
Orphy Robinson
Award-winning jazz composer and musician Orphy Robinson (MBE) is a multi-instrument musician – and plays the vibraphone, keyboards, saxophone, trumpet, piano, marimba, steelpans, and drums. Robinson is one of the major figures of the jazz scene – he has released records on Blue Note and played with Don Cherry, David Murray, Henry Threadgill, Courtney Pine, Jazz Warriors and Andy Shepherd. Robinson works across a variety of musical forms which include jazz, free jazz, free improvisation, jazz fusion, and funk music and is one of the founding members of our the Warriors International: Freedom jams that take place monthly at the Vortex. As a composer he has written music for television, Film, Theatre, Opera and contemporary Classical music.
