Musicians who have played together for over 30 years. This group revives the Vortex Jazz Quartet, loved for many years in the era of the Vortex in Stoke Newington. Now together again, but this time we’ll have a real supergroup.
John and Huw are musicians who are playing now at the highest international level. The new album with Huw (and Iain Ballamy and June Tabor) of Quercus will be released soon on ECM; while John is the guitarist of choice for everyone, from the greatest jazz musicians, such as Kenny Wheeler and Django Bates, through to studios and TV. (Indeed you may have seen him most Saturday nights on BBC1 last Autumn.)
Special guest this month is trumpeter Chris Batchelor, one of this country’s greats, who has played with John and Huw for many years too. Known for his work with, initially, Loose Tubes, his collaborations with Steve Buckley, East European musical forays and, most recently at the Vortex, for the band Pigfoot, tonight we’ll probably get lyricism mixed in with his imagination and dynamism. Martin France on drums.
