The announcement on Sunday night by the UK government of a “rescue” package for the arts hasn’t come a moment too soon. It gives us hope that, one day, we shall have the life of live jazz back.
But there are hindrances, such as limitations to audiences because of the need for safe distancing. So we shall be limited to size of audience and of bands. Already we are seeing some live music emerge in other countries, but imperfectly to the extent that audiences are frustrated. Indeed, Willisau Festival in Switzerland preferred not to take place because of audience limits.
How can we make these things work? How can a club like the Vortex make up for these limitations? Where will streaming hook into this?
