Post Brexit. Is UK Jazz getting a more unique voice?
For the past 50 years or so, British musicians have developed a strong voice but in a European context. Is it a surprise that Django Bates has been so instrumental in developing some of the most exciting European jazz musicians of recent years (such as Lucia Cadotsch, Petter Eldh and Marius Neset) or that so many incredible pianists were taught by John Taylor in Cologne?
But, with Brexit and the consolidation of jazz without so many Europeans here, perhaps that’s why so many are now in demand? Such as Rob Luft working with John Surman and Elina Duni. Or Nicki Iles working with NDR Big Band. And a new album of Seb Rochford with Kit Downes on ECM.
But perhaps that’s just an illusion and actually the jazz musicians here are as European as ever.
