Can one see progress in music (and indeed any other arts)? Or is it just an evolution? Or just a failed rehash? Today’s discussion is more philosophical in outlook…
Perhaps there have been a few breakthroughs – such as free improvisation, or bebop. But is the new better than the old? Is there perhaps something new on the horizon?
So even though, intriguingly, jazz has “progressions” and “changes” in its chords, is this reflected in the way that the music has moved?
Oliver Weindling, director at the Vortex, leads this weekly discussion, which is open to all, including musicians, fans. Feel free to join in or just listen!
