Much music (and indeed art) over the years has been made by musicians (artists) with strong beliefs. Be it the likes of Wagner (and anti-semitism), Chick Corea (and Scientology) or the strong leftwing beliefs of improvising musicians here such as Paul Rutherford.
But how essential are they to appreciating their music? Can, or indeed should, the music be appreciated in abstract terms by the listener?
