This week’s discussion looks at how whether the era of giving money just for the quality of the music is perhaps now going.
But, if one looks at how the Arts Council was started in 1946, as a reaction to the politicisation of culture under the Nazis, the era when government funding of culture was arm’s length was perhaps a “blip” in the way in which music (and arts) have been funded. It was a lovely idealism that couldn’t last? So for that reason, we shouldn’t be surprised. But maybe we need a rearguard action?

An interesting article about this subject from last week’s Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/dec/06/threat-arts-government-society-political-tides
