According to sociologist Max Weber, charisma “is the authority of the extraordinary and personal gift of grace.” Merriam Webster goes further: “a personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure (such as a political leader)”. Charisma is also the name of a Lee Morgan album!
This sort of leadership in terms of getting musicians going in a group, and communicating with audiences, could be regarded as an important possible way of achieving some of the objectives in music. Or is it? Can it be taught? Can we learn to be “supernatural”?!
Join our freewheeling and relaxed weekly discussion, hosted by Vortex director Oliver Weindling. Now well into its third year.
