December 14
The award-winning WorldService Project return to The Vortex with a bang, having released their third album For King and Country on Rare Noise Records, and toured across the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, China, Japan and India in 2016 !!
As a two-day-Xmas-bonanza, WSP invite you for their usual brand of explosive and heart-wrenching anti-Brexit statements of said five rebellious British soliders, darting between Frank Zappa, Meshuggah, Weather Report and Monty Python like a daredevil on the battlefield – as well as introducing you to new faces from across the UK.
Joining WSP tonight, the powerful Zeitgeist from Leeds are a jazz/rock trio delivering their visceral music rooted in both jazz and metal. Having performed across the north, Zeitgeist are a band to look out for.
Opening the night, DEAD HEDGE trio were initially recognised around their home base of Liverpool as the arresting in-house-band at the (nowsadly defunct but nevertheless) indispensable city centre jazz café Mello Mello. From these roots in the eclectic and richly diverse, DEAD HEDGE was formed
December 15
As December 14th, the second night of WSP’s mini-Xmas-bonanza residency will feature two very special guests alongside the wild and mischievous quintet.
Hailing from Edinburgh, Thunkfish are the sole entity at the forefront of the not-quite nascent PTHRONK scene. They are a tight, yet unpredictable blend of jazz, punk, thrash, prog and funk, with influences from Headhunters to Metallica: One moment head-nodding, infectious grooves, escalating to mosh-pit intensity, one minute rhythmically ambiguous and expansive.
Long-time friends of WSP, Snorkel are a south London based collective whose members come from different corners of the alternative scene, bringing together the tactics of improvisation, electronica, and sound art. Propelled by the drums and the rhythms generated by cheap samplers and drum machines, the band revel in the joy of angular repetition, throwing in elastic interruptions on guitar, trombone, analogue and digital synthesisers and vocals.
