Lekan Babalola’s new project , The Sacred Funk 4tet play jazz highlife music with an “old skool warmth”. Having met in Birmingham, the 4tet personnel represents different genres, cultures and generations!

Robert Mitchell is an award-winning pianist, keyboard player, composer, songwriter, festival curator, poet, and author. The Vortex performance celebrates the 2024 piano solo release “A Study (In The Key Of Now)”, recorded as part of a solo concert given in the King’s Hall at Newcastle University in November 2023.

The Sandler/Woods Quintet is led by Guildhall School of Music postgraduate students Benjy Sandler and Julian Woods, who have been united by their mutual interests in chromaticism, polyphony, and microtonality.

This brand new ensemble, led by jazz drummer/composer Finn Genockey, features some of the most exciting up-and-coming jazz musicians currently studying at or recent graduates of London conservatoires Guildhall School of Music, Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music.

New York-based, London-born Alex Hitchcock is an immediately distinctive improviser and a leading voice on the saxophone on the international stage. Tonight, he returns to the Vortex with his quintet featuring trumpeter Alexandra Ridout.

Vocalist Clara Green makes her Vortex debut with a project under her own name, join the band for a night where the gripping earthy sounds of the north meets the London jazz scene.

Jim Rattigan presents his latest project: new compositions specially written for a superb jazz and string quartet. Experimenting with this non-traditional line-up to create vibrant, exhilarating music. Expect melodic French horn lines, space for improvisation, and complex yet accessible music.

Heidi Vogel vocalist with The Cinematic Orchestra has performed around the world from The Sydney Opera House to Fuji Rock and Headlining Montreux Jazz festival with Quincy Jones in attendance.

The Sam Norris Quartet brings together some of the most creative and distinctive young musicians on the UK jazz scene- pianist Jay Verma, double bassist Will Sach and drummer Harry Ling. Sam’s compositions fuse exploratory jazz improvisation, driving contemporary grooves and pensive classical chamber music.

A finalist in BBC Young Jazz Musician 2022, Luke Bacchus is one of the most exciting emerging jazz musicians on the UK scene. Born and raised in London to Guyanese parents, Bacchus musically explores his Caribbean heritage as one of his major sources of inspiration.

Annie Whitehead arrived on the London jazz, pop and world music scene in the early 80’s. Since then she has brought her distinctive sound to a wide range of projects, exploring many different musical styles. These include, amongst many others: the Brotherhood of Breath, various groups with John Stevens, Elton Dean’s Newsense, the Penguin Café Orchestra, McCoy Tyner, Carla Bley, Abdullah Ibrahim, Jasper van t’ Hof, Louis Moholo, and Robert Wyatt.

Guitarist Nick Costley-White returns with his trio featuring Josh Morrison on drums and Conor Chaplin on bass, this time with special guest, internationally renowned trumpeter Steve Fishwick. They’ll be playing contemporary jazz standards by the likes of Cedar Walton, Kenny Dorham and new original tunes.

London based trumpeter/composer Grifton Forbes-Amos returns to the Vortex with his quintet featuring: James Akers (tenor sax), Jay Verma (piano), Nathan Dawkins (bass guitar) & Ayo Salawu (drums).

The History of Cardenio is a symphonic poem whose characters go through betrayal, madness, loneliness and impossible love. Composed for trumpet, drums and double bass, the work retraces musically one of the stories contained in Cervantes’ Don Quixote, whose plot was brought to the stage by William Shakespeare.
